Pennisetum Alopecuroides: Dwarf Fountain Grass

Of all the ornamental grasses available, Fountain Grass is extremely popular with gardeners at every level. This grass is attractive from late spring well into winter, and only needs one trim a year to grow perfectly. It is one of the best small fountain grasses used for landscaping.

These are beautiful plants for both beginner gardeners and seasoned green thumbs looking to liven up their yards. Evergreen in mild climates and low-maintenance in colder zones, cultivars of this pretty grass add waves and texture to landscaping when they're in season and provide winter interest with dried foliage when temperatures drop.

Fountain grasses perform best in full sun , with at least 6 – 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. They adapt to various soil conditions.

Fountain grass performs best with regular watering. Allow the soil to dry out a bit between waterings and water again when the top 2 inches of soil feels dry to the touch. Water more often during heat or dry spells. Plants in containers will need water more often than those in the ground.

Pennisetum, like most other ornamental grasses, needs little to no supplemental fertilizer. In spring, mulch around the base of plants with a layer of compost to replenish soil nutrients.

Pennisetum Aopecuroides, or as I like to call them, the bottlebrush grass plants, start showing off their feathery flower spikes (you might know them as "tassels") in late summer and fall. They definitely add a fun new texture to your yard! Happy Growing!
